ShiftTally Support
Help for ShiftTally, the mileage and CRA tax logbook for Canadian gig drivers. Write to shifttally@mpoweredstudio.com and a human will answer.
Contact us
Email shifttally@mpoweredstudio.com. We aim to reply within two business days.
To get a useful answer first time, tell us your device and OS version, the version number shown at the bottom of the Tax tab, what you expected to happen and what happened instead. If a figure looks wrong, the tax year and the screen it appeared on matter more than a screenshot of the total.
Never send us your password. We cannot see it and will never ask for it.
Subscription, billing and refunds
ShiftTally needs a monthly subscription: Standard covers one vehicle, Multi-Vehicle covers as many as you drive. Current prices are shown on the subscription screen in your own currency before you confirm anything, along with the free trial if the App Store offers your Apple ID one.
Billing is Apple's, not ours. These are the terms, and they are the same ones shown on the subscription screen before you buy.
- A subscription is monthly. Your App Store account is charged when you confirm the purchase, and again for each following month — Apple takes the renewal within 24 hours before the current month ends — until you cancel.
- Prices in the app are Canadian dollars. The App Store confirmation sheet shows the exact amount you will be charged, in your own currency and including any tax, before you agree to it.
- Where a free trial applies, its length and the price that follows it are shown on the subscription screen and again on the App Store sheet. If no trial is shown there, none applies to your Apple ID and billing begins straight away.
- A free trial becomes a paid month automatically when it ends. To avoid being charged, cancel at least 24 hours before the last day of the trial; cancelling during the trial costs nothing and keeps the app working until that day.
- Apple allows one free trial per Apple ID across ShiftTally's subscriptions, and both plans share it. If you have used it before, on either plan, your subscription starts as a paid month.
- Changing plan while a free trial is running ends the trial and starts the paid subscription immediately, so any unused days of it are lost.
- Cancel any time: iPhone Settings, tap your name, then Subscriptions. There is no cancellation fee, and access continues to the end of the period you have already paid for.
- If a price changes, Apple tells you before it applies and, where your agreement is required, asks for it. The subscription is not renewed at a higher price without that.
- Refunds are Apple's to give, not ours. Request one at https://reportaproblem.apple.com.
- Cancelling deletes nothing. Your drives, receipts and reports stay on your device and in your cloud account, and are there if you subscribe again.
- New phone, or paid but still locked out: open the subscription screen and tap Restore purchase. That asks the App Store what your Apple ID owns and re-applies it.
Drives are not being recorded
Automatic detection needs location permission set to "Allow all the time" — "While Using the App" is not enough to catch a drive that starts with the phone in your pocket. Check that first, then check that Auto-Detect is switched on in the card on the Dashboard; it ships off until you enable it.
A drive is only started once the phone has covered about 250 metres inside a minute, which is roughly 15 km/h averaged out. That threshold exists so walking and a stationary phone never mint a trip, and it means a very short crawl in traffic may be missed.
Detection also stops if Low Power Mode is on, if the phone dies, or if you deny the permission later. It is a convenience, not the record: the CRA expects a logbook the taxpayer maintains, so review what was captured and add anything missing by hand from the Logbook tab.
Detected drives arrive untagged. Until you mark one business or personal it does not count toward your deduction — that is on purpose, so nothing is claimed that you did not confirm.
Signing in and syncing
Sign-up and password reset send a six-digit code to your email. If it has not arrived within a minute, check the spam folder and confirm the address you typed. Codes expire, so request a new one rather than reusing an old email.
ShiftTally works offline. Anything you log without a connection is kept on the device and uploaded on the next sync, so a failed sync is not lost data. If the same account looks different on two devices, open the app on the one holding the newer records and let it finish syncing before comparing.
Exports and your records
The Tax tab exports the selected year as a PDF report or a CSV, both of which include the T2125 Line 9281 working. Keep one somewhere you control: the CRA can ask a self-employed driver to support a claim for six years after the end of the tax year.
Figures in the app are arithmetic on what you entered, using the marginal tax rate and cost per kilometre you chose. They are a guideline, not a filed return — have a CPA or registered tax preparer confirm them against current CRA guidance before you file.

Privacy, data requests and deleting your account
Your GPS coordinates never leave your phone; only the distance worked out from them is stored in your cloud account. The privacy policy sets out every field the app records.
To erase everything, use Delete Account on the Tax tab. It removes your receipt images, then every row we hold, then your sign-in, then the copy on your device. It cannot be undone, so export your report first. Note that it does not cancel an App Store subscription — cancel that in your device settings.
If you cannot open the app and want your data removed, or you want to ask what is held about you under PIPEDA, write to shifttally@mpoweredstudio.com from the address you signed up with.
Reporting a bug or asking for a feature
Both go to the same address. Bugs that involve a wrong number are the priority, so if a deduction, GST figure or set-aside total looks off, say which one and what you expected — that is the kind of report that gets a fix in the next build.
