Tax figures are a guideline only

ShiftTally is a record-keeping tool. It is not an accountant, a tax preparer or a filing service, and nothing it displays is professional tax, accounting, financial or legal advice.

Every figure the app produces — the Line 9281 motor vehicle deduction, business-use percentage, estimated tax savings, true net earnings, tax set-aside and instalment amounts, GST/HST registration verdicts and net tax owing — is arithmetic performed on the records you entered, using rates you chose yourself. The marginal tax rate and cost per kilometre are your settings, not published CRA figures.

That means the output is only ever as good as the input, and it can be wrong for reasons the app cannot see: a missed drive, a duplicated import, an odometer reading typed a digit out, a receipt that is only partly deductible, capital cost allowance, CPP contributions, provincial differences, Quebec's separate QST filing, a platform that remits tax on your behalf, or a CRA rule that changed after this version shipped.

Before you file anything, have your figures reviewed against current CRA guidance by a qualified professional such as a CPA or a registered tax preparer. You remain solely responsible for what you report, for the records that support it, and for any tax, interest or penalty that results. ShiftTally, its developer and its suppliers accept no liability for amounts claimed on the basis of the app's calculations.

Keeping your own records

Automatic drive detection uses your device's location and can miss a trip, split one in two, or record distance that differs from your odometer — tunnels, parkades, a dead battery and a revoked permission all cause it. The CRA expects a logbook the taxpayer maintains, so review what the app captured, correct it, and keep your receipts.

Your records are stored on your device and copied to your cloud account, but you are responsible for your own backups. Export the yearly PDF or CSV report and keep it somewhere you control.

Terms of Use for the subscription

ShiftTally is licensed, not sold, under Apple's Standard End User Licence Agreement, which applies to your use of the app and of anything you buy in it.

Who you are dealing with

ShiftTally is published by MPowered Studio, based in Ontario, Canada. Questions about the app, your subscription or your data go to shifttally@mpoweredstudio.com, and a person answers them.

The app is bought through the App Store, so Apple handles payment and holds your billing details. We never see your card, your Apple ID or your billing address.

Subscription and billing

ShiftTally requires a monthly subscription: Standard for one vehicle, Multi-Vehicle for as many as you drive. Current prices are shown on the subscription screen, and by the App Store in your own currency, before you confirm. Where the App Store offers your Apple ID a free trial, the subscription screen says so, states its length, and shows the price that follows it.

These are the terms on which it is billed. The same wording is shown on the subscription screen before you commit to anything.

• A subscription is monthly. Your App Store account is charged when you confirm the purchase, and again for each following month — Apple takes the renewal within 24 hours before the current month ends — until you cancel.
• Prices in the app are Canadian dollars. The App Store confirmation sheet shows the exact amount you will be charged, in your own currency and including any tax, before you agree to it.
• Where a free trial applies, its length and the price that follows it are shown on the subscription screen and again on the App Store sheet. If no trial is shown there, none applies to your Apple ID and billing begins straight away.
• A free trial becomes a paid month automatically when it ends. To avoid being charged, cancel at least 24 hours before the last day of the trial; cancelling during the trial costs nothing and keeps the app working until that day.
• Apple allows one free trial per Apple ID across ShiftTally's subscriptions, and both plans share it. If you have used it before, on either plan, your subscription starts as a paid month.
• Changing plan while a free trial is running ends the trial and starts the paid subscription immediately, so any unused days of it are lost.
• Cancel any time: iPhone Settings, tap your name, then Subscriptions. There is no cancellation fee, and access continues to the end of the period you have already paid for.
• If a price changes, Apple tells you before it applies and, where your agreement is required, asks for it. The subscription is not renewed at a higher price without that.
• Refunds are Apple's to give, not ours. Request one at https://reportaproblem.apple.com.
• Cancelling deletes nothing. Your drives, receipts and reports stay on your device and in your cloud account, and are there if you subscribe again.

Acceptable use

Use ShiftTally to record your own driving and business expenses. Do not use it to fabricate records, to support a claim you know to be false, or to interfere with the service or other accounts. We may end access to an account being used that way.

No warranty

ShiftTally is provided as-is. We do not warrant that it will be uninterrupted, that location tracking will capture every drive, that sync will always succeed, or that its calculations will match what the CRA or your accountant concludes.

Limitation of liability

To the fullest extent the law allows, ShiftTally and its developer are not liable for lost income, lost records, missed deductions, reassessments, interest, penalties or any indirect or consequential loss arising from use of the app. Where liability cannot be excluded, it is limited to the subscription fees you paid in the twelve months before the claim.

What the app records and where it goes is set out in the Privacy Policy, which forms part of these terms.

Changes and governing law

These terms may change with an app update; the updated date at the top will change with them.

They are governed by the laws of Ontario, Canada, without regard to conflict-of-law rules.
